What does GSM mean for T-shirts?

Fabric weight, not the weight of a whole shirt

GSM means grams per square meter, written g/m². A square meter of 290 GSM fabric weighs 290 grams. That number does not mean a finished T-shirt weighs 290 grams: the amount of fabric, trims and garment size also matter.

US listings may use ounces per square yard (oz/yd²). Check that the unit refers to fabric area before comparing it with GSM. AS Colour's fabric weight explanation describes both units and how fabric weight is measured.

Read “heavyweight” in context

A heavier fabric can feel more substantial and hang differently. Weight is one part of the picture; it does not by itself confirm softness, warmth, durability or quality. Compare similar fabric types and read the material and construction details too.

For one brand's reference point, AS Colour's T-shirt comparison lists its Staple at 180 GSM, Classic at 220 GSM and Heavy at 280 GSM. Those are that brand's product specifications, not specifications or quality ratings for Goodwork.

How to read the Goodwork preview

Our current design descriptions propose 290 GSM jersey for the Everyday heavyweight tee, 380 GSM loopback cotton for the Halfday crewneck, and 500 GSM fleece for the Depot hoodie. These are different garment and fabric designs, so comparing their numbers alone will not tell you which one suits you.

These specifications remain provisional. The images are design visualizations, not proof of a fabric's texture or finished weight. Ask us to confirm the final material and measurements before paying.

Pair fabric information with fit

Choose the kind of layer you are looking for, then compare its measurements with clothing you already wear. A fabric-weight number cannot tell you how much room a cut leaves around your shoulders or chest.
